I was absolutely blown away by this book, once I sat down to start it I had to keep reading until the end. Galva is straigntforward and sturdy and I absolutely fell in love with her as a main character. It's been a minute since a fantasy world pulled me in quite like this one, which felt endlessly full and rich even againt the horrific backdrop of the setting and despite the characters staying in the same country for most of the novel. Not to mention the goblins. The GOBLINS. This is the kind of story where goblins are really allowed to shine as a fantasy race. They are terrifying and completely alien, Buehlman does a lovely job of making them feel like creatures that think differently from humans. Their treatment of kynd as livestock was unnerving and I got actual chills while I read.
